Bureaucracy - Good or Bad?

Bureaucracy is defined as a set of complex hierarchical departments, agencies, commissions, and their staff that exists to help the president carry out his constitutionally mandated charge to enforce the laws of the nation. It is a wide spread phenomena throughout the US, in the Federal, State, County, and City levels of government. There are both advantages and disadvantages of this "institution" as seen by many.

The disadvantages of a largely bureaucratic government are as numerous as are the advantages. One of the cons is a thing called "Patronage." Basically this is where president appoints his buddies to certain positions or gives them and their company's grants with the whole quid pro quo mentality. Obviously this is a very graphic display of abuse of power. If caught and exposed to the public, it can lead to distrust among the constituents that will likely be long term. For instance, a president is elected, and a friend of his that has helped his child get into the college of their dreams could very well be appointed ambassador to a nation abroad. Now it goes without saying that any appointment by the President must be approved through Congress, but when patronage comes into play, several candidates that are

Both arguments can be seen as quite valid depending on personal opinion and historical fact. Through the research that I've done and the studies I've examined, I personally feel that this styling of government is needed in the United States. It is one of the many things that sets us apart from the various countries throughout the world. It allows for the individual and personal freedoms that we frequently take for granted.

While it can be argued that the bureaucratic system we have in place here in the United States is almost entirely flawed and deficient, there are many people who on the other side of the coin can present several arguments for the opposite position. While one of the things that so many people argue as one of the major flaws of a largely bureaucratic form of government is what is oft referred to as "red tape," it can arguably be stated that this "red tape" is actually a good thing. This system allows for thousands of positions and committees within the government for the thousands of issues, questions, and needs that the American people might have. It allows a farmer in Idaho to address and actually talk to someone about the fact that the county road outside his land desperately needs repair. For if this system of "red tape" did not exist, and there were but just a few people to handle ALL of th
