Pyramids

There have been many theories explaining the purpose of the pyramids of Giza, and how they were built. This essay will explore the opinions of historians and reach a conclusion on what the purpose of the Giza pyramids were and how Egyptians built them.

One of the most popular theories regarding the purpose of the pyramids was that they were used as a tomb. Egyptians saw their Pharoahs as God-Kings rather than just leaders. Pharoahs were worshiped as Gods and thus is understandable that ancient Egyptians would see it necessary for the Pharoah to be buried in a tomb that would be fit for that of a God-King. One argument against this theory was that a particular Pharoah had built at least five different pyramids, surely not all five could have been for his tomb. Some say that perhaps that he could have been cut up and his separate limbs were placed in separate tombs but this theory is unethical because anciant Egyptians believed that to live in the afterlife one must have his physical body intact. This is the purpose of mummification, to keep the body in good condition for use in the afterlife, so if the limbs were seperated it would be inpossible to go on to the afterlife. Another interesting argument against the tomb theory is m

"In my opinion, the builders were part of a global Early Human Civilization that broke up about 6,000 years ago, and the massive Giza Pyramids and Sphinx are their only relics that survived from the end of their civilization about 6,000 years ago until about 5,100 years ago when Menes united Lower Egypt, including Giza, with Southern Upper Egypt."

ramps were constructed for the stone blocks to be dragged up to the pryamids and then as the pyramid became taller the ramps would get higher and taller untill the at last the pointed capstone could be fitted on top. Problems that this opinion arouses is that because of the ramp becoming higher and longer as work progresses, the ramp would have far exceeded the 5.955 Million tonne mass to that of the Great Pyramid, and no substantial evidence has been found of these ramps. Also as work progressed, the angle of the ramp would become to great and would have been extremely difficult for men to carry such large and heavy stones (each weighing over two tonnes) up such a steep ramp.

Alford uses this evidence to further prove his argument that the Great Pyramid of Giza was built by a pre-dynastic culture rather than the ancient Egptians.

Historian Alan F. Alford disagrees with the theory that the pyramids at Giza were used as tombs, infact, in a recent interview conducted by John East, he supurts the radical view that Khufu's Great Pyramid was infact possibly built by an entirely separate race to the ancient Egyptians.
