The fact that both main characters choose to use their intellectual prowess rather than their physical abilities, through several difficult situations that usually would have triggered a hasty and/or violent reaction, in order to make sure that they succeeded in their designated quests, shows that both characters go beyond their regular restraint on their naturally impulsive natures, because they know that if they do not that they will not succeed.
