Throughout history poets such as Sophocles, Plato, and Augustine have discussed what it is to be a virtuous person. The question that many have asked is if freedom requires virtue. In my personal opinion I believe without virtue freedom would not be able to survive. A community or state needs virtuous people. Even though all may not have virtue it is important that the majority must be able to know right from wrong.
In Sophocles, Plato, and Augustine's writings they show their opinion on the relationship between freedom and virtue. Each writer does this in his own special way. In Sophocles' play Antigone the question of whether to bury Polynices' body is argued. Creon has set a law stating anyone who has gone against their own city shall not be buried and be left to die. Everyone has their own opinion to what is most important to themselves. I feel that unselfishness, liberality, and courage are important to my freedom. With them I would not be able to do what I want and others will treat me with respect and dignity that a free person deserves. One must be able to stand up for themselves and at the same time be there for someone who is less fortunate.
To keep our community's freedom citizens have to show many qualities. Justice, liberality, truthfulness, and selflessness are some of the many qualities one must have in order to keep freedom in their community. Without justice lawmakers and police would be able to take that freedom away. An individual's freedom is only maintained when one has courage, temperance, and wisdom.
