7th Seal Critical Analysis

Many science teachers in Kansas are disappointed in how the state voted at the beginning of the school year. They are upset because they must now cut out part of their curriculum that has been present for decades; the teaching of evolution. Members of the board feel that teaching evolution can cause children to doubt their faith (Belluck). They convinced parents it was for the children's benefit. While, some people agree with the board's decision, it still might not have been the best and most beneficial choice.

Evolution has been a controversial word since the times of Charles Darwin. The thought that apes were distant relatives of humans seemed impossible to most people. The word also contradicts the beliefs of many religions around the world. They do not use the general definition of the word, they just focus on one portion. Evolution is not just applied to the human species, it is the evolution of all plants, animals and organisms on the planet.

Science teachers are supposed to teach their students what the scientific field believes is true, not the church. Science tries to explain how the world works and how it came to be today, but they cannot incorporate God into their theories. The job

of a scientist is to try and explain things logically based on how the world seems to work around him or her, not make claims based on religion . There is no way to prove that God exists, those who believe in Him, do so on faith. This places Him out of the realm of science.

Many forms of evolution lead to the evolution of a species. Cosmological Evolution is the explanation of how the universe was formed. This type of evolution is often thought of in relation to The Big Bang theory. It helps explain how galaxies and stars were formed. This leads into Planetary Evolution which refers to the solar system. This includes the formation of planets, moons, asteroids and comets. There is also the idea of Terrestrial Evolution which focuses on the formation of our planet. This theory states that the earth was formed from a cloud of gases and dust that were compacted, heated and solidified (Sewell).

The word evolution needs to be thought of by the way it is defined. When a person hears the word, he or she in most cases thinks of the ongoing debate of Evolution vs. Creationism. The term can be applied to many different subjects and, in science, covers all things that are living. Evolution means the sophistication of someone or something over a long period of time. This can include the sophistication of the mind or body. People do not have to believe that evolution occurred, but they do not have the right to prohibit its use in the classroom. In the case of the Kansas school board, when choose not to mention the word evolution while teaching, they are also prohibited from mentioning Creationism according to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In thi
