Evolution has been a controversial word since the times of Charles Darwin. The thought that apes were distant relatives of humans seemed impossible to most people. The word also contradicts the beliefs of many religions around the world. They do not use the general definition of the word, they just focus on one portion. Evolution is not just applied to the human species, it is the evolution of all plants, animals and organisms on the planet.

Science teachers are supposed to teach their students what the scientific field believes is true, not the church. Science tries to explain how the world works and how it came to be today, but they cannot incorporate God into their theories. The job

This leads into Planetary Evolution which refers to the solar system. This includes the formation of planets, moons, asteroids and comets. There is also the idea of Terrestrial Evolution which focuses on the formation of our planet. This theory states that the earth was formed from a cloud of gases and dust that were compacted, heated and solidified (Sewell).

The word evolution needs to be thought of by the way it is defined. When a person hears the word, he or she in most cases thinks of the ongoing debate of Evolution vs. Creationism. The term can be applied to many different subjects and, in science, covers all things that are living. Evolution means the sophistication of someone or something over a long period of time. This can include the sophistication of the mind or body. People do not have to believe that evolution occurred, but they do not have the right to prohibit its use in the classroom.
