"I am desirous of your assistance in one of those little experiments in which I amuse myself here in my study." This is a quote from Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" which helps to emphasize his romantic style of writing. Many of his stories help reflect the fact that he had a strong sense of understanding life and people. He not only wrote fantastic stories, but he also taught lessons and ideas with them. Nathaniel Hawthorne's work expresses his romantic ideas with these three fundamental parts of romanticism: peoples' emotions, the unusual, and nature.
Many of Hawthorne's stories describe peoples' emotions in good detail. "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" is all about people and their emotions. The first part of the story describes each different character's life and how they have messed it up terribly. H
Finally, his work also has an emphasis on nature. Nature and man's interaction in it is a key topic in romantic literature. "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" is all about man vs. nature. Each character loathes the loss of their youth. They hate how, through the natural process of aging, they have become old and ugly. They hate how their lives have been wasted and practically thrown away because of their own personal faults. So they drink the life nourishing waters to become young again only to become more depressed when they are once again aged. The inclusion of man vs. nature is vital to this story and vital to the lesson it teaches.
certainly not the case with Hawthorne's work. A great example is "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment." The idea that one can go back to their youth by drinking a magical drink is most definitely odd. The
