The Search for the Manchurian Candidate

The Manchurian Candidate is a term that came into language in 1959. It was based on a story about a joint soviet-Chinese plot to take an American soldier capture in Korea, condition him at a special brainwashing center located in Manchuria, and created a remote-controlled assassin who was suppose to kill the president of the United States.

Mind control was a way that the United States could find out what and when any country or terrorists had thoughts of inflicting any damage on our nation. A drug that could make somebody willing or unwilling to tell top secrets about other agencies that were spying on the government and our Central Intelligence Agency, would help out dramatically. One of the main cases having to do with LSD was the Frank Olsen case that would soon screw up the lives of the whole Olsen family. Gotlieb wanted to test his LSD, and he chose Frank Olsen as his guinea pig. Gotlieb spiked his drink with a little LSD. Ben Wilson recalls Frank Olson as being psychotic. Wilson stated that Olson couldn't understand what happened; he also thought some one was trying to play tricks on him. After watching Olson wonder around and worry about his job, and how he felt he wasn't capable of doing it to his normal ability. Ruwet decided that Olson needed psychiatric help. Apparently Ruwet felt that since the CIA had given Olson LSD, he felt responsible and needed to get him some help. They were going to take him to a doctor, but Gotlieb had other ideas for Olson. Gotlieb wanted to test his experiment more, so they took him to New York where they would try to put more LSD in his drinks. They used a magician to try to make him happy, but it only made him suspicious, so they just cut their day short. Olson was to go see his family for thanksgiving, but on that morning he came crashing through a window and killed himself. This would be devastating to the CIA, due to the fact that they now had to figure out a way to cover up the death of Frank Olson.

Dulles ordered the Agency's bookkeepers to pay the costs blindly on the signatures of Sid Gotlieb and Willis Gibbons, a former U.S. Rubber executive who headed TSS. If the United States could find a way or a drug to make other nations spill their secrets then that would be a big plus to us. The United States realized that every other nation such as Germany, France and Russia were and have been in the under table game of spying for a long while now.
