The war. It began and ended in a few seconds. The war was the death for thousands all over the world, and while Montag describes the last few seconds of Mildred’s life, he may as well have been describing the death of almost all of the inhabitants of their city. Mildred and Montag had an interesting relationship, one that parallels that of the relationship between the people of the city, and those such as Clarisse, Faber, and the hobos in the country. In the beginning of the novel, most readers would not be able to distinguish any kind of dividing line between Mildred and Guy Montag, yet as the story continues, the line becomes more clear. Such as was the story of many of the hobos; Montag at first has no idea of what is in a book. He never pauses to think about what would make books such a threat as to need to burn them.
