Religion and Politics
Glory be to the Father and to the State One year has passed since the memorable People Power Two took place at the EDSA shrine. Likewise, it will not be long when we will be celebrating the original People Power that took place sixteen years ago. When an individual watches films that were documented during both occasions, he/she will definitely catch sight of a nun or a priest, a member of a religious group, a rosary, or a statue of Mother Mary. Some dramatic moments from EDSA I would include these nuns and priests courageously trying to stop tanks and military personnel from passing through the crowd in an attempt to save the deposed President Marcos. As we commemorate the two "People Power experiences" during this time of the year, religion's role, most especially the Catholic Church's role for its success, must never be disregarded and should be greatly appreciated. I suppose Cardinal Sin should also be greatly honored for initiating the mass movement at EDSA sixteen years ago. What greater way to give religion its deserved recognition than by flocking to the EDSA shrine and offer the occasion to Mother Mary every EDSA celebration. Even though the Filipinos have a couple of People Powers to be proud of, the relationshi
As we can also see in our country, our primary religion, the Roman Catholic has evolved into a portal of various sects that have diverged from the traditional Catholicism. Firstly, there are still those whose main priority is to worship and venerate the holy trinity and saints. An example of this is the Pink Sisters who spend their time immersing in devoted worship. Monasteries of these sorts would care the least with political issues. They would just pray over the country and ask for guidance from above. Some sectors, in the meantime, tend to take part in political action. El Shaddai, the CBCP and many others comment on political issues every now and then. They would sometimes endorse candidates during elections so that the Catholic community would know who is moral and just. At present time, religion, backed up by the theory of postmodernism has evolved into a more promising way of expressing political desires. But first, why do we use religion to express it? It is because they easily can take on the role of being a mediator of political movements because they stand at the intersection of public and private life. As for most of the Protestant churches in the United States especially the black ministries, religion is inseparable from political action. They believe that civic duties are part of their responsibility as Christians. However, these general characteristics of the Protestant churches cannot be attributed to all the Protestant churches in the United States. Some churches, especially the white (Caucasian) churches do involve themselves in political action but not as intense as the political activity of black (African-American) churches would. My conclusion here is that the division of the churches could be accredited to the economic development and peace and order situation of an area. In the white communities of Northwest Chicago, economic development is visibly seen. Almost everyone has a decent job and the peace and order have been handled well. In contrast, the black neighborhood in South Chicago is home to a lot of crimes and violence due to poverty and underdevelopment. Racial issues are also a factor in promoting more political action in the black neighborhoods than in the white neighborhoods. "The fact that ethical convictions are rooted in religious faith does not disqualify them from the political realm. However, they do not have secular validity merely because they are thought by their exponents to be religiously authorized. They must be argued for in appropriate social and political terms in harmony with national values." He adds that in both cases, we should be prepared to deal with complexities, uncertainties, and overlapping realms in which practical discrimination must find workable principles to guide us that are as compatible with fundamental Constitutional imperatives as human reason can devise. That is why it is just proper for us to tackle both interactions as a whole in order to understand everything in totality. As we study this topic in Comparative Politics, we do not clearly see the delineation of the two interactions so I would just strive to tackle both aspects. The issue of religion and politics defines another set of issues. Church and State deals with the relationship of institutions that is independent of each other. In contrast, Religion and politics has to do with two spheres of activities in the life of the same persons. Citizens who belong t
