Being a Relative Means that you Should "Look the Other Way".

Being a relative means that you should "look the other way". Discuss this point of view with

One of the themes in "Montana 1948" is that of whether looking the other way if a family member does something completely wrong is right or not. This is what David's father Wesley had to decide in the novel when his brother committed a horrible crime that changed his family's life forever.

Frank was the local doctor in Montana and also the brother of Wesley. He was found out to have been sexually assaulting Indian girls who were his patients, and when one of them happened to tell somebody about it, he murdered her. Wesley then had to decide whether he was going to enforce the law like he should as the sheriff of the town, or whether he should turn his back on the law and forget that Frank had done what he had done. His father Julian was completely set on the idea of letting Frank go free even though he had broke

Wesley is really shocked when he is first told about Frank's wrong doings, and kind of goes into denial. He really wishes he didn't have to deal with the problem because he knows what trouble it could cause tension between family members if he had to arrest Frank. When Wesley says: "I wish you wouldn't have told the sheriff", it is obvious that he really doesn't want to deal with the problem at hand, but it is inevitable that he will have to because he is the sheriff of the town and it is his job to do so.

In the end I believe that Wesley did the right thing. Just because somebody is family does not mean they are innocent. They should be treated the exact same way as if anybody else committed the crime because they have done just as bad. It would be extremely hard to do this sort of thing to a member of your family but if the world was run on the basis of turning your back on the law for your family, the world would be a very bad place ful
