Louis Armstrong

Louis Daniel Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901. Although he was born on

August 4, 1901, he celebrated it on July 4, 1900. He did this because it was what he was told and therefore believed.

Louis came from a poor family in New Orleans. His father, Willie Armstrong, worked as a laborer, and he left the family shortly after Louis was born. His mother was a domestic servant and a part-time prostitute name Mayanee Armstrong. She also ended up leaving the family. After his mother left, his grandmother took care of Louis and his sister Beatrice. Louis said that it was mainly the love of his family that got him through the hard times.

In his biography, "Louie," he described his neighborhood as a battlefield. He called it this because only the toughest people lived there, and the people that did live there would fight and shoot a lot. He also said the one block between Gravier and Perido Streets was more crowded with people than you will ever see in your life. When Louis got out of reform school at the age of fourteen, he worked selling newspapers, unloading boats, and selling coal from a cart. He also started listening to music at clubs like Clean Dance Hall, Funky Butt Hall, and Mahogany Hall. Joe "King' Oliver soon became his favorite musician and also his mentor. By 1917, Louis was playing in groups at dive bars. From 1919 to 1921, he played in Fate Marable's band in St. Louis. In 1922, Louis received a telegram asking him to play in Oliver's band in Chicago. In 1924, he married the piano player of the band, Lillian Hardin. By the end 1924, she had pressured him into leaving the band.

In 1963, Louis recorded "Hello Dolly." It became such a big hit that it knocked the Beatles out of the number one spot. After that song he became more popular than ever. All the T.V. shows wanted him to be on their shows. His last big hit was "What a Wonderful World" in 1968.

Louis moved to Los Angeles on July of 1930, and he started a band called Louis Armstrong and his Sebastian New Cotton Orchestra. While touring England he was given the name "Satchmo", short for Satchel Mouth. From 1930 to 1933 he toured across the country and throughout Europe. In 1936 he starred in a mov
