The History, Synthesis, and uses of Aspirin

The earliest known uses of the drug can be traced back to the Greek physician Hippocrates in the fifth century B.C. Hippocrates wrote about a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that could ease aches and pains and reduce fevers as long ago as the fifth century B.C. In the 1700s, the scientist Reverend Edmund Stone wrote about the success of the bark and the willow in helping to relieve fever and pain. Scientists were then able to identify the chemical Salicin as that which provided the relief. The modern form of Aspirin that is used today is mostly based on the Bayer version. The Bayer company began in Germany in 1863. The modern version was invented by scientist Felix Hoffmann, a Bayer scientist. Hoffman had made some of the formula for aspirin and gave it to his father who was suffering from the p


Aspirin truly has a wide range of uses. Aspirin is an analgesic, which means that it is effective in pain relief. Aspirin also has the ability to serve as an anti-inflammatory agent, providing pain relief from the swelling associated with arthritis and minor injuries. In addition, aspirin is also an antipyretic compound. This means that aspirin is able to reduce fever. According to Dr. Samuel Shapiro and his colleagues at Boston University, a regular dose of aspirin can help to prevent bowel cancer. Shapiro's explanation is that aspirin interferes with the biochemical mechanism that causes cells living the bowel to become cancerous. So far, the roughly 15-20 studies conducted in this area have yielded results that back up Shapiro's claim. In addition, aspirin is known to slow prostaglandin production and thus reducing inflammat
