Animal Research-pro
Imagine a world without chemotherapy, organ transplants, joint replacements, and antibiotics. These are just a few of medical wonders developed through animal research. Animal research has been a heated discussion for the past fifty years. Some argue that the research done upon animals is cruel and unethical. Others believe without animal research, there would be no new advances in the medical field and thousands of lives would have been lost if animals were not tested on. This topic has prompted many activists, scholars and doctors to voice their opinion about animal research. Joy Williams stands in utter opposition to animal research. On the other hand, Ike Sugg and Dr. Joseph Murray express the advantages to animal research and their disapproval of the opposition's activist. After thoroughly examining both sides of the issue, I have to take a stand on the side that is pro animal research. Joy Williams, an animal activist, writes an essay titled "The Inhumanity of the Animal People". Williams calls for an immediate end to the scientific research on animals. She points out the inhumane practices the researchers do to the animals. Animals are blinded, deceberated, mutilated, burned o
I must accede with Ike Sugg's and Dr. Murray's stand on the issue. If researching on animals saves thousands if not millions of lives, I am all for it. A human life has more precedence than an animal's life. Thousands of animals are being slaughtered in the butcher shops, but you do not hear a ruckus about it. I believe there are a lot more imperative issues that could be protested other than animal research. The researchers need a break from the radical and violent activists so they can fully concentrate on their work. It is not fair not to give any hope to the AIDS victims. The chance at human life by far supercedes the right to life for an animal. The animal research topic has been and probably will be for a while a highly debated issue. There needs to be compromises between the two groups so they can both get along with their respected lives. There will always be new viruses and diseases developing in this world and the most effective way to combat it is through animal research. The world has been alleviated from many diseases, but there are a lot more that could possibly be treated through animal research. More than likely, there will be no compromise between the two sides and people are either going to be for or against animal research. So it is your decision, which is more important: an animal's life or a human's life? Moving on to the other viewpoint of the debate, Ike Sugg's article, "Getty's Torture", tells a real life story of Jeff Getty and his fight against AIDS and PETA. Getty was given a year to live by the doctors because AIDS had killed almost all of his T-cell, the bodies natural defense to AIDS. A baboon's bone marrow had been scientifically proven to withstand high amounts of HIV without contracting AIDS. So the doctors thought if Getty received a bone marrow transplant from a baboon, he still might have a fighting chance to live. PETA launched a massive campai
