It is said that an average ten percent of the population are categorized under the idealist personality profile (www.advisorteam.com). There are many different traits that this fit this profile. Idealists yearn for romance in their lives. Also, often times they tend to be very giving. Finally, idealists pride themselves in being true to themselves. Holden Caulfield is an idealist. Throughout Holden's story, I noticed his constant yearn for romance. When Holden discovers that Stradlater was dating an old neighbor, he became very curious. "Where is she?....I oughta go down and say hello or something....How'd she happen to mention me?" (Salinger, 31). Obviously, Holden is very jealous of Stradlater's relationship with Jane. Holden constantly talks about his hatred towards phony people, which leads me to believe that he tends to be true to himself and others. Throughout my conversation with Holden, I notice he has a strong hatred towards anything phony. In a visit that Holden made to Mr. Spencer, a teacher at Pencey, he uses a word that Holden thinks is very phony. When Mr. Spencer describes something as "grand", Holden claims that this word is "phony" and it's a word that "he really hates" (Salinger, 9). Along with Holden's dislike towards phony things, he also hates phony people. On one of Holden's trips to a bar, he runs into an old acquaintance, Lillian Simmons. Lillian invites Holden to sit with her, but Holden doesn't want to because Lillian was "strictly a phony" (Salinger, 86).
