The colonists had developed a sense of identity and unity as Americans by the eve of the Revolution. Although the crown still held enough control over them to prevent absolute separation, they were adamant on their attempts of becoming independent from England. The colonies had initially grown to be habitually reliant on them for survival; and, even so, every effort to split from England was met with a reaction intended to rein unyielding control. However, they recognized themselves not as English colonies, but rather pawns used only for the success of the crown; and, therefore, decided to endeavor for free
