Strategies for Effective Decision-Making and How I Can Apply

Life is filled with choices and decisions. At some point in his life, every person comes face to face with situations that require serious decisions. Every decision is risky because it is a commitment that determines the future. It is said that the most important decision a decision maker can make is to decide whether a certain problem needs a decision or not. There are problems that will simply go away on their own just as there are problems that require serious attention and decision-making. Many times in the past, I have wasted my time and energy in senseless things, which I thought at that time were problems when in fact they were not anything to fuss about. An also many times I have regretted these wasted moments. But then, regret is also another waste of time if we dwell on it. The moment has gone by and we cannot do anything about it.

Decide is derived from the Latin word, "decidere," which literally means "to cut off or to kill." The act of deciding then can be actually considered as an act of killing all but one of many alternatives with the hope that the chosen alternative is "best" or "right."

There are people that are scared of decisions. They are overwhelmed by the feeling of being torn apart by opposite forces. I have felt the same way many times before. There were instances when I felt very undecided and afraid. But it came to me that I had to move on with my life and I knew then that the only way to accomplish that was to get things over and done with. I had to make a decision so I can close that part of my life and move on to the next. Stalling is another thing. This is when we refuse to face the issue at hand. It is true that we need courage in life and stalling will not make things any less unpleasant. It only prolongs our agony and misery. Overreacting is when we let a situation spin out of control. Already our emotions take control. There are situations wherein our emotions have no place. We must keep in mind that letting them rule over us during these circumstances would only make matters worse. What we have to do is take a breath and think things over logically. Vascillating is reversing decisions. We half-heartedly commit to a course of action. I think that when we commit, we have to be hundred percent certain and we must have full confidence in our decision because the future is at stake. Making half measures is muddling through. We make the safest decision to avoid controversy but not d
