Comparison Essay (1984 and The enemy of the State)
Both, "Enemy of the State" and 1984 are great peaces of work. You can see that the authors and directors put a lot of effort in to them. The author or 1984 is George Orwell. He is well known for his literature, especially Animal Farm which he wrote in 1945, and of course a great political novel 1984, which was published in 1949. In most of his writings Orwell wrote about politics. In 1984 , he tried to show what the world would look be under totalitarianism. He was trying to get his point across, that people should think for them selves, and not let the government tell them what to eat, when to sleep, how to live, who to hate and who to love. The main character, Winston Smith, tries to rebel against the party because he doesn't believe in their rules, he wants to have the right to say 'no' and be able to have his own opinion. In the book, a term surveillance is used a lot. People are always being watched, and if they make a mistake they will be executed.Enemy of The State is a political thriller with a lot of visual effects and really interesting story. The main actors are Will Smith (plays Robert Dean) and Gene Hackman (plays Brill). The movie is directed by Tony Scot; another really famous movie that he directed w
In the movie Robert is really smart and he solves his problem very well. At the end he makes the main guy of the F.B.I. that wants the tape to go and meet with one of Roberts former clients that have a different tape and don't want to give it away because it has some secret information on it as well. But the F.B.I. person doesn't know that it is the wrong tape and demands for it. Since Roberts former clients don't want to give it away they get in to an argument and they start shooting each other and kill everyone except Robert that ends up under the table. So Robert leaves the scene with out a single scratch and everything goes back to how it was. On the other hand Robert Dean is a well-off lawyer and everything in his life is going really good. He has a wife and a son, a nice house and a good car. He runs in to one of his old friends that unnoticeably puts a computer tape in his bag that has a video of a murder of a congressman, and the person that kill him is the main person in the F.B.I. The F.B.I. starts secretly looking after him and trying to get that tape and kill him. That is where the surveillance is used. The F.B.I. put a bug in to almost every piece of his clouting (pants, shoes, pen, watch), then they put cameras in to his house to watch his wife and him-self. That is similar to the novel 1984, where Winston is being watched everywhere he goes. But instead in the book they are trying to catch Winston do something wrong other than not find him and kill him, like they want to do to Robert. Both stories are very exciting and thrilling. They both make us think about how life should be and what kind of things could be happening to us, but we prevented it. They clearly show the two types of government: capitalism and totalitarism. It shows that capitalism has a lot better living conditions and rules. And the major theme in both of the stories is scrutiny (surveillance). Surveillance is a big theme in the movie as well. Robert Dean is being followed by the F.B.I. and they show off their latest inventions. Basically they can see him all over the world at any time. With a help of astronomical satellites they follow him out side.
