Edward Abbey

"What entertains many and exasperates others is Abbey's unique prose voice. Alternately misanthropic and sentimental, enraged and hilarious, it is the voice of a full-blooded man airing his passions"-Peter Carlson, People Magazine. Edward Abbey was born January 29, 1927 in Indiana, Pennsylvania around the village of Home. Today, if you travel down Route 119 ( 10 miles north of Indiana) you can find a state historical marker commemorating Edward, adjacent to the Home village marker. As a child, he was the oldest of five children. Because he grew up during the Great Depression, his family was poor. His father held many different jobs, while his mother taught school and played the organ in church. Edward enjoyed writing his own comic books. His literally talents began at an early age. During high however, he failed journalism, twice. Before he joined the Army in 1943-47, Edward decided to


Edward Abbey was married five times and fathered five children. His marriages ended because of divorce, and in one case his wife died of Leukemia. He developed a severe case of pancreatitis that became a condition that lead to internal bleeding from his esophagus. He battled the pain for seven years. On March 14, 1980 Edward Abbey died. His friend saved him from dying in a hospital bed, and brought him home to die among his family and friends. His burial request was to be buried somewhere in the desert. He wrote down directions saying he wanted his body to be transported in a pickup truck, no undertakers, embalming, coffin, just a sleeping bag, "I want my body to help fertilize the growth of a cactus or cliff rose or sagebrush or tree." He wanted to have a wake where there was music, food, alcohol, bonfire, and dancing.
