Without a doubt, the Roman and the Han empires can be considered two of the greatest ever. Both became very powerful and dominant in their respective areas. However, the Roman Empire developed into a higher, more advanced society because of their strong economic system, military prowess and their free social structure.

While both the Romans and the Hans developed complex economic systems, the system the Romans used was clearly superior. Though both the Romans and the Hans were obviously dependent of agriculture, the vast spread of the Roman Empire into different regions allowed for the trade of different goods such as European wine and African grains. Each individual area specialized in certain products, and these products could be taken by way of the Mediterranean to anywhere else in the empire. While they also had some variety of goods, the Hans, with their smaller empire, were limited to growing wheat and rice. Water transportation was crucial to the economy of the Roman region, as it allowed fast and efficient movement of goods. Another aspect of Roman economy was the use of slave labor, which is something that the Hans did not utilize. The Romans used their prisoners as slaves. The power of an empire in ancient times depended solely on the power of the military, and the Roman definitely had a more exalted military than that of the Hans. Both the Romans and the Hans had a grand, powerful army. While both societies trained their armies, the Romans had highly trained army. The Roman army became a professional force; the individual soldiers were skilled in the use of many different weapons. Even though the Romans lacked the advanced technology the Hans possessed, they had the training to defeat their opponents. In contrast, the Hans won many of their battles because of sheer size. The Roman army used many conquered people as soldiers. These people made up a majority of the Roman army. The use of conquered people as soldiers allowed the Romans to station troops all around the empire in order to protect it, something the Hans were never able to accomplish. The central Roman government also paid the soldiers and rewarded them for their work. This in turn prevented inter-fighting between factions of the army, something that happened frequently in Han controlled China. One of the main purposes of these armies was to defend the frontier from invaders. Still, the Roman army was powerful both offensively and defensively, which is exemplified in the fact that they both defended their homeland and helped expand the borders.
