In "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, the main character, Matilda Loisel grows up in a upper middle class family and all she wants to do is become noticed and rich. She goes to the ball, become noticed, then all of a sudden, she looses her life by loosing the necklace. The author shows a lot of situational irony to develop the plot that contributes to the surprise ending.

Mme. Loisel would love to feel rich and live in a castle with beautiful clothes and everything she wants. When it was her time to come to the Minister of Public Instruction ball, she wants to go but at the last minute she decides not to go. " I am vexed not to
