Troubled Children: It
On Tuesday April 20, 1999 at approximately 11:00 a.m., 2 students went on a killing spree, slaughtering 12 of their classmates and 1 teacher at Columbine High School (Larison). The two suspects (Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17) had been noted for being outcasts in the school. Others knew the two as part of a group of suburban high school boys known as the Trench Coat Mafia. The members of this group were notorious for wearing dark trench coats, and quite often had German slogans and swastikas on their clothing. These two boys somehow acquired assault handguns, shotguns, and pipe bombs. The pipe bombs had been built in their own homes, and their parents did not even notice (Larison). They had been planning their assault on the school for a couple months to coincide with the 110th anniversary of Adolf Hitler's birth. At first, the murders were directed toward ethnic minorities, jocks, and religious people; then the two killers began to spray bullets down the school hallways indiscriminately (Obmascik). This cartoon should have a significant meaning to anyone with kids today, no matter what his or her child is like. It is the responsibility of each parent to know what is going on in the lives of their children. Some people think that their kids should be trusted fully, and that they should not interfere in their lives, and others think that they have more important things to do than to check on their children all of the time. The main problem is that parents are not responsible for the actions of their children, because they can simply claim immunity and be free from worry. This problem will probably never change, but there are a few things that could be done to help. A law, which makes parents responsible for the actions of their children, would encourage parents to take a more active roll in the lives of their children for fear of getting in trouble themselves. This would in turn reduce juvenile crimes and teenage violence. Also, every parent should try to become more involved in the lives of their children, encouraging their children to be better
