Standardized Testing Yea or Nay

A standardized test is something administered under controlled conditions specifying where, when, how and for how long people are to respond to the questions or "prompts." Standardized tests should meet acceptable standards for all aspects of learning. But they don't, so they must be eliminated.

As Gardner explains in The Theory of Multiple Intelligence, "Intelligence is found in varying degrees in every individual" (Gardner 357). We are all on different levels, but intelligent none-the-less. The main focuses of these standardized tests are math and english. According to Gardner, there are many other areas of concern when determining ones intelligence. Understanding these, confirms no matter what our tested intellect level on a standardized test, we are all intelligent in our own way. The seven Intelligences are: Musical, Bodily Kinesthetic, Logical-Mathematical, Linguistic, Spatial, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal. Musical Intelligence is when a person is musical inclined. They are a natural at reading, writing or playing music. Stevie Wonder is a prime example. He is blind, but is musically intelligent. Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence is when a person is natural

Society is conditioned by getting good grades. The thrill over accomplishing real life tasks and skills are replaced with anxiety over upcoming tests and concern for high grades. This has to end. The root of the solution of the education problem in America has everything to do with the need to eliminate standardized testing, not with the need to improve the individual's performance on them. Schools cannot be changed in any important way unless standardized tests are eliminated. We shouldn't worry about trying to win the "unofficial" world test competition in our schools, we should measure the success of our educational system by whether or not we are producing graduates who grasp the ability and desire to learn.

The best sign of a successful education system would be that students want to go to school. Then they remain excited once they get there and in the end, are prepared to creatively respond to the kinds of open-ended problems they will actually face in the world. Standardized testing doesn't honor these creative aspirations, so why have them. After all, we are here to live and learn about life. Who can set that standard?
