Gender Socialization and

Gender in a lay man's term can be defined as the condition of being a male or female. But in sociological terms gender is the psychological, social and cultural aspects of maleness and femaleness. In many cases people tend to get mixed up between sex and gender; it is so because there is only a very small difference between the two terms. Sex is the biological state of being a male or a female that is it is determined at or before birth, and gender being the sociological aspect is acquired as the individual socializes. This distinction is between sex and gender is very important because it reminds us that males and females are different in many ways, the behavioral and experiential differences do not come naturally from the biological differences between sexes. In addition this differentiation allows us to separate masculinity from maleness and femininity from femaleness, making it possible for us to divert from cultural notions of gender without having any impact on their sex.

Gender development is one of the most important parts of socialization. It is during this process an individual acquires his role as a male or a female in the society. The entire process of socialization would be incomplete without examining the process by

Socialization into expected gender roles is one of the most important lessons that young children learn. In addition to parent's and teachers intentional efforts to shape gender roles, they are also learned from the mass media to which children are exposed everyday. For pre school-age children, an important source of information is the picture books written specifically for their age groups are often read and re read to them in their impressionable early years. Children's books provide their audience with cues about life in particular about what goals and social norms are available and appropriate for members of their sex. Social learning theories and research findings emphasize that children learn to believe and do what they see and hear. Learned bases for gender differences are well established in the first few years of life. (Maccoby & Jacklin, 1974; Richardson, 1988)
