That Eye, The sky

A detailed Summary of That Eye, The sky

After reading the novel 'That Eye, The Sky' written by Tim Winton, I found that numerous characters underwent gradual change following the unexpected events that occurred in their lives. In particular the change in 'Ort's' character was very evident. It became clear through the alteration in 'Ort's' spiritual beliefs, physical changes, and outlook on the world, that as a character he grew and evolved throughout the text. Influenced easily by the words of others, and through their actions 'Ort's' change is both a positive and negative experience. The boy 'Ort' was and the person he 'becomes' are both very diverse in their characteristics, actions and outlooks. 'Ort's' journey is both spiritual and physical, and continually challenges him.

When first introduced to Ort, we see a very young, innocent and naive child, who lives alone in the outback with his family and small group of friends. Ort appears to be a very sheltered yet imaginative child who relies on the experiences of those around him to gain a clearer understanding of the world he lives in. The "unknown" in Ort's life is replaced with extraordinary images of peculiar objects and sounds that replace his lack of understanding and knowledge. Orts visions of the sky resembl

Ort can now find more meaningful answers to his probing questions, and his own visions gain deeper meaning and play a bigger role in his life when he places God and other biblical references with his original thoughts.

The major revelation for Ort's spiritual growth, is his recognition of Henry Warburton's false identity. Ort has grown and learnt enough about Religion and life through Henry Warburton's stories and actions to identify what is right and what is wrong. Although Henry's words were honest and true, all resembling messages that should be followed and acted upon in order to be a good person Ort saw that Henry was far from the image he portrayed himself to be.

Ort is lacking explanations, craving for that one thing that can explain the unknown and cure his burning desire to understand life more clearly. It's the many people and events in Ort's life that change him from this fragile child exposed at the beginning of the novel, into a boy who witnesses new emotions of anger, love, hate, fear, and confusion. All of which come together and shape Ort into a new being.

ing an eye, jewels appearing in the flour jar, the bell in the forest, and the cloud that floats above the house are all images conjured up in Ort's mind to find some explanation for all the questions that he cant answer.
