Corzine v. Franks: NewJersey's Senatorial Race in 2000
The race for New Jersey's Senate seat in 2000 was run between Democrat candidate Jon Corzine and Republican nominee Bob Franks. This was an open seat race; hence there was no incumbent Bob Franks was born in Hackensack New Jersey and grew up in Summit New Jersey. He graduated from Summit High School in 1969 and DePauw University in 1973. In 1976 he received his law degree from Southern Methodist University. In 1981, Franks was a key advisor in Tom Kean's gubernatorial election campaign. He served two separate terms as chairman of the state Republican Party. He served in the New Jersey State Assembly from 1979 to 1992 and New Jersey's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1994 to 2000. All of these factors added together probably come out as a wash, if not leaning slightly negative. Spending became the only mainstream issue in this race. Bob Franks raised $6.4 million total, $5 million from individuals, $1.4 million from Political Action Committees and zero dollars from himself. Of the PAC money he received $901,000 was from business PAC's, $45,200 was contributed by Labor PAC's, and $265,000 came from single-issue PAC's. Franks raised a reasonable amount of money in his own right, that is, until you compare it to the war chest of Jon Corzine. I could be said that Jon Corzine ran the stronger campaign, based solely on monetary output and the final results. How could a sixty million-dollar expenditure not be considered strong campaigning? However, polling showed that Corzine was ahead by 12 percentage points as late as October 18th , and Corzine only held on to win by a lowly three percentage points, 50% to 47%.
