Methods of Writing

Throughout High School and College, students have been asked to do research papers. Most students do not like doing research because of the time involved and the subject matter but in High School and College it is a required paper for you degree.

When asked to do research, the same question always comes to mind. Which method should be used as a guide? There has only been two ways of doing research that I have been exposed to. In High School, the assignment was to pick a topic from a list of subjects that had no interest to me. Having no experience or very little knowledge on the subjects, it was difficult to keep focus on doing research.

The first step was to do an outline. This outline was a good way of organizing our paper. It kept all our information together, so when we had to write up our research report we were able to have paragraphs relating to the subject in a chorological order that made sense to the reader. Our notes were written on index cards and numbered according to the outline. This was a good way of organizing our notes.

Next we had to come up with a thesis, an idea or thought that brought to the reader the main point of the paper.

After reading the first three chapters, my confusion came to an end. I now had a better understanding of using a different method of research. Inquiry and Genre is used as a guide to writing the Contract Proposal.

Now I had to get information on my subject. In the Contract Proposal, it suggests an interview be done with a person who has knowledge on the subject you are interested in. I liked this part of the research. Instead of reading through so many reference books, I spoke to someone who is involved on a small scale on my subject. The time spent talking to one another, went by fast. I actually felt some of his own emotions as he talked about his favorite sport.
