Standarised Tests

Imagine for a minute that you are a high school senior with your entire life ahead of you. You may have dreams of going to college and becoming a rocket scientist or getting a job at the local factory and starting a family. Whatever your goals are they all depend on you receiving a high school diploma. Without that little piece of paper the options for your future become very limited. Now imagine that you have bad test anxiety and have trouble-taking test. Just recently you have been told that a new policy has been put into affect in the area where you live that mandates that all seniors pass a standardized test to receive a high school diploma. Now your future rests on your ability to pass one test. A person's future should not be judged on a high-stakes test. Students should not have to pass a standardized test also known as a high-stakes test to receive a high school diploma

High school students should not be forced to take high-stakes test. High-stakes tests are not a viable means of testing the competence of a student. This can be proven by the fact of score inflation. A CRESST paper entitl

(Phelps) The researchers compared student performance in math and reading from one commercial test given under high-stakes conditions in one school district to the student performance on a different commercial test with no stakes. According to research, students who took the high-stakes test showed improved scores overtime. However, the test issued solely for the purpose of study showed no improvement over time. (Phelps) Many feel that the high-stakes test scores become inflated because teachers are forced to teach the materials on the test. Meaning that high-stakes test are not a legitimate way to judge the overall knowledge of a student. Therefore they should not be the factor in determining if a student should or should not graduate.
