2001: A Space Odyssey
1) Moon-Watcher - One of the most innately gifted man-apes. Moon-Watcher demonstrates the ability to walk upright and to engage in crude planning. His mind is pushed along a bit further by the black monolith. He is the first person to kill another being for food.Dr. Heywood Floyd - A senior government official and ex-scientist. Floyd is sent to the moon to investigate TMA. He is an effective bureaucrat and an extremely wise scientist. He is one of the first men to see TMA-1 and to wonder about its intentions. Ralph Halvorson - The Administrator of the Southern Province of the Moon. He is said to be the security guard. Ralph is another of the book's bureaucrats, the man who greets Dr. Floyd on his arrival to the moon. David Bowman - A broadly skilled astronaut. David Bowman is chosen as one of two crew members to stay awake during the entire voyage to Saturn. He is intelligent and disciplined, which helps him survive the loneliness of Poole's death. He passes through the Star Gate never to be heard of again. Frank Poole - The other astronaut who is awake for the entire journey to Saturn. Poole is mechanically skilled and is the one who makes extra-vehicular trips, one of which ultimately results in his death.
9) HAL 2001, the human-like computer represents the vast advancements in technology. It symbolizes many of the concerns about current day technology. First off, HAL is AI that can think as good, if not better than, humans. With HAL being created, they created a machine that even they could not fully control. When it begins to think and deviate from it's own core instructions, it is a fear that then, and now (best represented in the movie: The Matrix), machines will eventually not have any use for use and haunt us in many unforeseen ways 7) Yes, since the book was written in 1968 it was at the beginning of space exploration and the author was fascinated by what might happen as a result of space exploration. He was also presenting idea's that, in reality, helped to pave way for what we use now. His idea of having satellites 'orbit' the earth got him nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. 3) All of the sudden the screen flashes into a view of Earth with a single rocket shuttle leaving the atmosphere headed to the moon. It flashes again to the moon, quickly scanning over the base and slowly coming over the ridge to Tycho crater where Dr. Floyd and his team are getting their picture's taken. All of the sudden a quick screech comes onto the speakers and you see all the scientists fall to their knees and hold their helmet's in pain. It then follows the path of the energy signal to the satellite, does a pan of the satellite and looks at Saturn and slowly fades out. This scene would be most effective becau
