Cold War

The Cold War laid its effects on many countries and nations, however, for some parts of the world the end of the cold war had a much greater effect. Of all the countries and nations that were left with an everlasting impression of the Cold War, Germany was left with much more. The rise and fall of the Berlin Wall directly altered the make-up of society and government structure as well as the attitudes towards the government in the last five decades.

The end of the Cold War brought the fall of the Berlin Wall. This in term reunited communist East Germany and capitalist West Germany. This has forced the Germans to adapt to a much more difficult lifestyle. The end of the Cold War has since brought a significant social and political change to a once powerful nation. Germany gained back the respect and dignity it hadn't seen since before World War Two.

Berlin, Germany today is the fifteenth largest city in the world, the fourth largest in Europe (Heaps, 1990, Pg. 1). Berlin has 3,350,000 people living in twenty boroughs (Galante, 1965, Pg. vii)." After the Second World War, Berlin became what was termed by diplomats "a hot spot" in the Cold War between communist USSR and the democratic west" (Heaps, 19

In the middle of the 1950's both German States rearmed. The FGR's armed forces (the Bundeswehr) became a major part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The GDR's National People's Army (Nationale Volksarmee-NVA) became a key component to the Warsaw pact (Ramm, 1989, Fall of Berlin Wall Site). This movement made a single nation to two different republics.

By the end of the 1940's the United States and the Soviet Union faced off in an increasingly ideological confrontation called the Cold War. The "iron curtain" between the two super powers cut Germany in two. Berlin's split government completely despised each other and rarely interacted with contempt. In 1949 the three Western occupational zones became the Federal Republic of Germany (FGR), or West Germany. West Germany was among the wealthiest nations. By the 1990's West Germany's economy and central banking played the leading role in European economy (F.R.D; L.G, 1991, Pg. 74). The Soviet Zone became the German Democratic Republic (GDR), or East Germany. A socialist dictatorship was put in place and carefully watched by its Soviet leaders. During the next forty years West Germany joined the Western Community and East Germany became part of the Western-most part of the Soviet Empire (Galante, 1965, Pg. 49). The division of the government further separated the general population as well as shredded the threads of their previous society.

On November 28, 1989, three weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Chancellor Helmut Kohl presented his Ten-Point Plan to the Bundestag. It was his proposal for the creation of an alliance between the two German States. This was one of the f
