Big Brother

Boys and girls, I am sure all of you have watched the television show Big Brother, some of you may even watch it religiously. After all, just under 8 million people in the nation regularly tune into the show, but have you ever wondered why?

Big Brother 'fever' has swept the nation for a third time this summer. Despite people complaining about the repetitiveness of the show, the ratings have increased and the third series has been the most popular so far. Last years figures averaged between 4 million and 5 million. However this series is failing to attract the younger generation, the proportion of under-34s watching has decreased to 53% from 57% last year. This has concerned advertisers as the younger generation are more susceptible to buying merchandise, subscribing to Internet viewing (which has now been priced at L9.95 per month) and to Big Brother interaction by SMS, this is going to cause the company to lose money. Money is an important part of the Big Brother, advertising companies want to make money from the show, channel 4 and the production company Endemol want to make money from the show and the contestants themselves enter to in the prize money.

His life will never be the same again. When Jade leaves the Big Brother house she will receive the shock of her life, many people have not voted for her in evictions because she is an entertaining character, she makes people laugh. However, little does she know, outside the four walls of the Big Brother house she is being called a pig, a minger, a backstabber, fat, ugly and there are even T-shirts being printed with her face on, and the slogan 'Lord of the Mings.' However, she made the decision to enter the Big Brother house so she has to be prepared for the consequences.

The show has genuinely revealed some useful psychological insights and it has been useful but it has had to use people in an extremely manipulative way to reach these conclusions. Melanie Hill, a contestant from the previous series of Big Brother describes it as 'A new set of lab rats waiting to be manipulated.' Channel 4 kept Big Brother fans guessing about the new series, although rumours of a 'heaven' and 'hell' house began well before the first show on May 24th. The characters were somewhat more manipulated in this series than ever before, which could perhaps explain the soar in ratings. Firstly, Endemol and Channel 4 asked the housemates to be honest in all eviction nominations. Then the rich and poor sides were introduc
