A detailed Summary of Homer


During 150 BC to 750BC, it was called Greek's dark ages and during this time, the skill of writing was lost so history relied on an oral tradition. History was passed on from person to person by sharing to great tales of Greek heroes and gods. These stories were told by peoples called Bards, who were wondering poets that went around from place to place and entertained. The greatest, and most famous bard was named Homer. Homer was a blind poet who among his many stories and poems, his two most famous epics were the Iliad and the Odyssey. An epic is a long collection of many lines that made up a story, many epics may last for a couple of nights, and when the epic was done, the bard would move on and tell his epic to yet more eager ears. The author of the two greatest epics in Greek culture was said to be a blind bard who was born in Iona, which is now the west cost of Turkey. Some historians say that he was born around 850 BC but other historians place him closer to 750 BC instead. There is not many things known about Homer other than a few clues of who he was left by him tro


Both of these men were the ideal Greek man. Not were they only the ideal Greek man, but they are also the ideal American man. From Homer, his epics and the Greek culture, the US has inherited the concept of Arête as well. This is portrayed in many of our movies, and television shows, all protagonist of the show/movie are those who are courageous, famous and honorable. That is why there are countless movies of underdogs winning, men rising up the occasion, saving the day and then becoming heroes. All this is just like those men in Homer's epics.

Though Homer's epics, many Greeks learned the powerful idea of Arête. Arête is defined as the idea to strive for excellence, to show courage in all situations, and to win fame and honor. In the Iliad and odyssey, the heroes of these epics are men who where witty, strong, courageous, determined, and honorable. In the Iliad were Apollo who is the main character, Apollo courageously slays Hector-the protector of Troy, and through his determination, strength and skills, the wins the war.
