Film Trailers
How do the Film Trailers for Mission Impossible 2and X-Men Persuade an Audience to View the film? These two films are now Box Office Hits- but why? Somehow the film companies have persuaded an audience to pay L4.00 of their hard-earned cash to go into a cinema and see the film. The film companies have created a trailer for the two films, which encapsulates the essence of the film without giving too much away. Is this hard to do and how did the film companies do this? When a film company makes a movie just like any other business venture they are trying to make money. Everyone likes cash in their hand to do whatever they want. The difference is we are talking about an international venture costing millions and millions of pounds with a lot at stake. This causes the film companies to pull out all the stops, to try and put in the big names, lots of action and everything that pleases the audience. This is exactly what Mission Impossible 2 and X-Men have done. Mission Impossible. When these two words are spoken we immediately say: "Your Mission, If you choose to accept it..." and "This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds..." This is what the film company tries to get across. It still keeps the original ideas of the hit six
The first dialogue we hear is by a female character, which says, "Hold onto something", this gives a fell that it is going to be fast, action packed and thrilling. The music is very fast and electronic, like the M:i-2 music but not the same, because it is not by a major artist and is more sci-fi. As the trailer goes on the music gets faster and faster and we get the cold, suspense enticing colours rushing at us. The camera starts rushing around and we see the monsters causing havoc in and around a city area. They are breaking the law and challenging all the authority in that area. All the humans seem helpless, we see this because the film distributors want us to see the monster are big, cruel and stronger than humans are, they want us to sense the helplessness of the humans in comparison to the monsters. We see a hairy werewolf and obviously the Film Company want us to sense the scariness of this, everybody links werewolves to horror movies. a) Appeal to audiences of BOTH sexes, the first film was also appealing to both sexes, Tom Cruise especially appeals to the women and the fast-action and martial arts appeal to the men. This list also applies to the X-Men film, BUT the X-Men trailer appeals to men. It is not a film that women really want to see so the film distributors do a good job of making it appeal to the men. They use lots of violent, suspense building and high-action scenes which is what the main market want. Another point of the X-Men trailer to attract the older generation to see the film, by older I mean 30's - 40's. This is because the comic book/magazine was out when they were younger and it wants them to reminisce about the magazine and attract their attention. These are the ways that M:i-2 and X-Men attract their customers. We also see the star who in this case is Patrick Stewart, he has a long history in sci-fi, because was Jean-Luc Picard in THE sci-fi show, Star Trek. The company put him in because as Tom Cruise relates to Action and Thriller, Patrick Stewart is linked to sci-fi. Although he isn't as widely renown as Tom Cruise everyone
