Boston Massacre

John Hancock said "Let this sad tale of death never be told without a tear; let not the heaving bosom cease to burn with a manly indignation at the barbarous story . . ." during his speech of the massacre on the 5th of March, 1774. "The Boston Massacre" was channeled different ways by different people. The Americans felt that it was a horrid massacre, on the other hand, the British felt that it was a small riot and I felt as it was a brawl. In this paper I will show and tell about the British, American, and my view of the "Boston Massacre" after I write what occurred.

In 1768, the British stationed troops to enforce the Townshend Acts of 1767. The king's finance manager, Charles Townshend, came up with a way to tax colonists called Townshend Acts. These placed import taxes on glass, paint, paper, lead, and tea. The colonists had to pay in coins, and the money would pay for the salaries of governors and judges. The main reason for the Townshend Acts was to stop smuggling. The British soldiers had the right to s

Before I thought that the Boston Massacre was a devastating event with the mean soldiers and the innocent people dieing. Now I see that it was not a "Massacre" but a brawl and the Americans provoked it. For their self defense the soldiers had to fire or else they might of have been killed by the mob. Then propaganda would pop up saying they killed 20 soldiers with ease. I see the Boston Massacre as a way for the Americans to awake the public and push people from pro British to pro American. The death of the five men seemed to hurt Britain more than it hurt America.

The Americans saw this as a horrible and terrifying event. They saw what Samuel Adams wanted them to see. Samuel Adam's picture showed British soldiers firing upon helpless citizens on a clear and nice day, when really it was pretty close to the opposite. Many Americans turned completely against the British, because of this event. It was a milestone to American Independence, because it enlightened the public to how mean the British seemed to be.
