Froissart, having worked as a secretary for King John of France , knew a great deal about pinpointing exactly what these other qualities were. He also considered what it was that made a king inferior and inefficient. A king must have certain qualities if his subjects were to love and respect him. He must have a strong will to complete a task undertaken, whatever the obstacles. He must be able to foresee the results of every step he took. Without the respect of his military and the commoner, a king has nothing. Being able to communicate with men is futile if you cannot convince them to follow you into battle. As seen above, the King's leaders did not heed his warning and continued in order to prove themselves better than the others. This lack of listening not only jeopardized their own lives, but also the life of the king who it is they were supposed to be serving. Earning the respect of a country's people goes way beyond the battlefield as one could imagine. It carries over into law making, taxation and everyday decisions. Who would follow the rules of someone they do not hold in high regard? Other than military force, which in order to use the king must have the respect of the military, what would prevent someone from not paying their taxes? All of these day to day decisions are made knowing that it was the king, the highest authority, who implemented them. Once the respect has departed, not only could a military battle be lost, but possibly an entire country.

Two more examples of a positive king include bold and daring. Once again, these tie into previously stated traits but should still be a main focus. This aspect of the kingship requires the willingness to give yourself up in order to better your country. A king must take a stand and be willing to lose friends and lives if it is something he feels strongly about. Unlike today's leaders, who are afraid of polls and ratings, a good leader should be concerned with strictly his own beliefs and not what the people surrounding him think. They must also take calculated chances, and based on their military strategy and intelligence, be able to decide how much is too much. This is all done for the honor and respect of his country. King of Bohemia illustrates what it means to take the bold and daring aspect of a kingship too far. As a blind man, he asked his knights where the field of battle was and entered it swinging his sword. This is a perfect example of stupidity and what it takes not to be a leader of a country.

The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women are all characteristics of chivalry. A king must be chivalrous to be respected by his subjects and also by his knights. Chivalry was a code that during its time was one of the most esteemed and commanded the reverence of all. In order to be considered chivalrous the king must be generous and loyal. This endears him to his fellow countryman, especially the knights. In the feudal system, the knights backing the king played a key role in the success of an empire. King Edward II is a poor example of a chivalrous leader. He was notorious for attacking his own subjects and taxing enormous amounts. Edward II was more concerned with himself, and therefore earned a reputation for plundering and lacking the chivalry needed to be an accomplished king.
