Cold Sassy Tree
Imagine your grandmother just died, and three weeks later, your widowed grandfather announces he is planning to get married again to a woman almost half his age! This is exactly what sets off the fictional novel Cold Sassy Tree written by Olive Ann Burns. Told in the eyes of southern town boy, Will Tweedy, and set in the summer of 1906, the charming story, Cold Sassy Tree, involves a family's struggle with life, death, realization, acceptance, and most importantly love, while a boy soon to come of age learns some of the most important lessons of his life. During the weeks surrounding his grandmother's death, Will realized changes and learned much about his grandfather that he had not known before . He saw the pain and grief his grandfather went through and how hard he wanted her to recover while praying, crying, caring for her in the week before her death. Seeing this, it was impossible to doubt how much Will's grandfather had loved her. After she died, Will understood how lonely a man he became and believed in his grandfather's love despite the incessant rumors and accusations that would follow. Although Mr. Blakeslee very much loved his late wife, he still was an old ma
By the end of the story, Will had grown not just physically, but mentally he had come of age. Provided with the lessons of life and love from his grandfather, he had become a man. Reflected in him was his grandfather's spirit, which would forever remind Will of the great man he was, and also help Will pass on these lessons to future generations. In the beginning, Mr. Blakeslee and Miss Love Simpson's relationship was strictly a business arrangement. But, as the two grew closer together, Will witnessed their love for each other slowly develop. Will's relationship with Mrs. Love grew and he came to know and love her as a real family member. Befriending her against the feelings of the rest of his family shows Will learning to accept people for who they are and not being as judgmental as the rest of the town. As Miss Love and Mr. Blakeslee grew onto each other, Mr. Blakeslee was transformed into a new person. He became strong again, since he had been devastated by the death, and also young at heart. This showed Will how to move on and love again. This illustrated to Will that someone may die, but your love for them never will, not even if you learn to love another.
