The Articles of the Confederation VS. the Constitution

During the history of the United States, our country has operated under two different constitutions. First, The Articles of the Confederation, which was put in effect in Maryland March 1, 1781. And second, The Constitution, which came into order in place of the articles in New Hampshire on June 21, 1778. The Articles of the Confederation nad The Constitution compare and contrast in many ways, especially regarding the specific powers by each to the national government.

The Articles of the Confederation mentions that the congress is composed of a single legislative body. Congress was composed of two and seven members per state. The states were only granted one vote a peice. Representatives were appointed by state legislatures. Each representative served a one year tearm in office, and he could only serve a minimum of three out of


The Constitution states that the congress is consisted of two seperate branches, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The new congress was allowed two Senators per state while the number of Representatives was based on the population of each state. The states were now allowed one vote per Representatives instead of one vote per state. Senators were appointed by state legislatures, while the representatives were elected by a popular vote. Each Representative was allowed a two year term in office while the number was six for Senaters. Both members of the Senate as well as Representatives could serve as many terms as desired. The chair of legislature for Representatives was Speaker of the House and the Vice President for the Senate. Any arguments made between the states was left up to the Supreme Court.
