A detailed Summary of Basketball
October 14, 1998, first day of basketball tryouts at Nowell High. This day and the four days that followed would change my life on a mental aspect forever. On this rainy day about 25 girls walked into the Nowell gym excitedly to begin the competition. Along with those girls were my cousin and I, whose name was Tina. She was very excited, even though she was a freshman, and this was her first year trying out. As for me it was my first time trying out but I was a sophomore. After going to the locker room and changing, we walked out together, stood on the dim steps that lead from the locker room, took a deep breath, and walked out onto the basketball court, where our dreams awaited. "Are you ready for this," Tina said? "Hey, I've waited for this all my life." I replied. I started to warm-up with some of the other girls, by shooting balls. Tina jogged a couple of times around the court. She really stood out from some of the other girls, because she had on a red pair of track shorts and a tank top on, when most of the girls had on basketball shorts, and a tank top or shirt on. I had on a pair of black basketball shorts and a gray Nike shirt. "It's about time you tried out Crystal." Tiffany stated. She was a medium sized girl with a lig

ht brown complexion and dark red hair, and beady brown eyes. "Yea, I felt it was time for me to show my skills," she laughed and so did I. We continued our conversation for about 2 minutes, and then Tina joined us along with some other girls. After about 5 minutes of warming up, the coaches walked in. The lady coach was Coach Shaw, and she was the varsity coach. My cousin and I coach had the male coach, Coach Walker. He was a Caucasian man about 5'7, with black hair, and a full black beard, he looked over weight, but I remember some of the girls saying "Don't let his size fool you into thinking he is not in shape, because he is in great shape." He yelled out "Alright ladies lets bring it in." We all walked to the center of the gym, where a large Indian's head was embodied into the wooden floor. "These next four days will be very easy, if you have been conditioning your body for this tryout." When the coach said that I was feeling very confident. I had been practicing my breathing while running, I had been working out, and working on my basketball skills for the last 2 weeks. I was ready! "We are going to try and ease our way into this tryout and then, I'm going to hit you ladies with a lot of sprinting, so I hope you are prepared." A lot of girls at this point had a certain look on their faces, as if they were silently asking themselves "should I leave or not." "Now let's start, give me a 5 min. jog around the gym." At this point I felt sorry for Tina, she had just jogged around the gym, but to my surprise she was looking o.k. After the 5-minute jog, we started some basketball drills, and a little more running, and then we were split into varsity candidates and JV candidates. Tina and I went to the other end were the JV squad was. About 2 hours into the tryouts, Coach Walker allowed us to take a 3 minute break, so that meant that even though we were tired, and every leg muscle ached in pain, we had to run up the steps to get water if we wanted. Some girls didn't go up because they knew they were not going to mak
