San Francisco State University Student Union
San Francisco State University Student UnionSince the beginning of human history, people have hallowed out of their immediate surroundings an environment increasingly more pleasure, more efficient, and more beneficial to their existence. Interior design was uppermost in the human mind from the earliest years, and it reflecting social, political, and artistic growth. Back in the ancient time, people started to take into account proxemics, it is the nature of the interior space, our relationship to it, and our relationship to the people who share with us. The Student Union of San Francisco States University is considered a contemporary building, and it should provide comfortable lounge areas for rest, relaxation, conversation, or studying, but in reality it is not satisfy students needs for safety, comfort and privacy. The Students Union had been there for many decades, and it would be more convenience, secure and comfort for all the students if we make changes in floor plan and its structure. Because, from my point of view, the building is not safe and comfortable, I would change the exterior and interior of the Student Union into a new building that would accommodate all students' needs and make them feel comforta
The wall from the main entrance of the Bookstore, I will change it to a glass tile walls. I would replace all the windows to clerestories to add more light to the building inside, because now the students are being there mostly use florescent lights, and it is the ugliest reflected light. All the doors will change to bigger sizes especially, the doors of the lobby on the main floor because this door is very small. The colors of the exterior will be light yellow, and more likely a neutral color. The building will be brighter and special instead of a dull grey color. I will remove all the concrete beams because they make the ceiling look clumsy. The all the supporting columns in the building would be painted in marble faux finishing. The Recreation Level would be stayed the same because I think it is a good place for relaxing, playing and enjoying. The interior of the building so complicated, and there is always traffic jam in there. I will change the main floor into an open floor plan because this ideal layout provides well-defined areas of activities and good traffic lanes to all areas. In addition to that, it would be safe for the students when we have traffic flow in public in case we have earthquake or fire occur in the building. The first thing I would change is to move the Bookstore to another place because the Bookstore is totally is another services. Since it now would be an open space, I would have a focal point for this room is place a circle concrete stand with a sculpture standing on it. The reason I would choose to have the stand at the center of the room is because it would bock the view the students somewhat while they are sitting at the benches. At the right of the entrance, there would be an Information counter. And all around the wall with glass tile would have the upholstered benches set in to the walls, so the students can sit down and relaxed when they just want to take a little break before entering to the restaurant or doing others activities. There would be several single sofa seats place around the corner of this lobby room because sometimes the students need more privacy. Lighting in this room mostly use natural light from the glass tile wall and clerestories. There would be a sunken ceiling with simple decoration that makes the structure of the room more beautiful. Colors in this lobby will be on the light blue and neutral.
