A detailed Summary of Family

The Family is one of the most important social groups we belong to as we grow up and become part of society. It is the place where we learn most of our values and find a belonging. Without our families we would not be the same people we grow up to become. Throughout history, the word family has carried many different meanings. Most people think of a family as a mother, father, and several children, but a family could be almost any group with common characteristics. All of the many different types of families are very important to society as well as the individual as they mature and find a place in life.

There are several different definitions of the word family in the dictionary. The first definition in the dictionary is, "kindred, especially one's own spouse, parents, and children". This definition goes along with the common perception of the traditional family. According to Plumb, the traditional family has in the past served three primary social functions: providing a labor force, the transmission of property, and the education of children, preparing them to start their own family. This had created a cycle which allows humanity to carry on. One family's offspring make there own family and that family's offspring make

When you are younger you are a lot more dependant upon your parents. You pretty much do what you are told and you have no other options because you basically cannot live without your parents. You learn from them and are with them a majority of the time. As a child you are instilled with the values of your parents and start to become the person you will be when you are grown up. When you get older you gradually become more independent and therefore spend less of your time with the family. Family will not be as important an aspect of your life. You start to grow away from your family because they have already given you your values and ideals and are no longer needed in order to raise you. Eventually you will be an adult and start a new family of your own.

My friends from high school and work have had a very strong influence on who I am today. Most of my hobbies and interests are shared with my group of friends. Friends most often share opinions and ideas and are similar people. I like comedy movies, baseball, and playing video games. My friends basically like all these same activities. We share common interests because that is how you become friends. Then once you become friends you pick up hobbies and other things you like to do from them. What kind of person I would have become without being a part of these families is something no one can ever know. Perhaps my choice of college was ever due in large part to friends already attending NIU and friends choosing to go there. My free time was spent mostly with friends and therefore I gain the same likes and dislikes as them.
