A detailed Summary of Kami in "Kwaidan"

In the different stories presented in the "Kwaidan", there were several different tales about encounters with the supernatural. One of the aspects looked at in the stories was the type of supernatural being that each story includes. In order to better understand the supernatural beings, it is important to classify them as to which type class they belong to.

The first story of a supernatural encounter was the story titled "Black Hair". In this story, the supernatural being is the first wife of a young samurai that leaves for a chance at escaping poverty. The spirit of the first wife showed a great deal of characteristics that are common among ghosts. The first characteristic was the fact that she chose who the person that she wanted to appear to. The only person that had any contact with this spirit is her ex-husband, the samurai. Another ghost-like characteristic portrayed by the spirit was the fact that she could appear any place. In this story, the spirit not only appeared in real life, but she also appeared within the samurai's mind and tormented him that way. The fourth story told is the story "The Tea Bowl". The kami in this story was what appeared to be a young samurai that appears in the reflection of a tea bowl. This kami seemed to fall under the classification of a goblin. The kami first appeared in a tea bowl, which may not have been used for a long period of time, which is much like an unused tool. The kami also seemed to be mischievous in the sense that he did not attempt to bring any harm to the guard. Also, even though it was the reflection of the guard that appeared to the woman in the end, it seemed as though the kami could appear to anyone. These characteristics lead to the notion that the kami in this story is more than likely a goblin.

In the story "Suddenly Horse Dung," the kami appear to fall under the classification of a goblin. The kami in this story share several traits with goblins. The first common trait is the fact that the kami first appear at dusk. On top of appearing at dusk, the kami also appear to be mischievously natured and do not intend to bring any ill-will upon the people it interacts with. The key feature about this kami that places it in the goblin category is the fact that it changes shape into a curtain. The attribute of changing form is very common among goblins, and is usually a good indicator that the kami is indeed a goblin.
