Artificial Turf

ARTIFICIAL GRASS VS. NATURAL GRASS

A primary consideration when comparing artificial vs. natural is the amount and type of

usage the facility is proposed to have. It would appear that while many sports would prefer to

see only natural grass fields, the decision of which surface could serve better to certain needs is

what must be considered its long term intended use, and if that schedule includes heavy use and

the need for diversity, a serious argument can be made for artificial turf. The debate has raged for

more than 30 years over whether there are more football injuries on artificial turf or natural

grass. NFL Players Association survey of 957 players, nearly 95 percent said they

thought that playing on artificial surfaces increased the risk of injury. Nearly 87 percent said

they preferred playing on grass fields as opposed to artificial grass which tends to have variable

hardness and there were a number of wear and tear injuries from tackles and falls, as well as

friction burns from skin on surface. There were also a higher number of injuries to the knees

anterior cruciate ligament - the famous ACL - on artificial grass. There wasn't the same glide and


natural grass surfaces in good condition, it is recommended that there use is limited to 10-15

football games per year, or one other sporting function per week. The cost to convert the field to

contractor to maintain field during initial growth period. Periodic equipment replacement can be

short term usage but without a doubt artificial turf is better as a long term product. The saying is
