A Rose for Emily
How does Faulkner direct and shape the reader's reaction's to the story?Faulkner takes advantage of flashbacks while he is constructing his narrative in order to accomplish a great effect of suspense. First, the narrator presents some fictional facts that provide verisimilitude to the short story. The narrative starts when Miss Emily dies. Then the narrator, which is a third person one, introduces the community's readings of Miss Emily, also talking about the behavior of this community in relation to her. Furthermore, he introduces the second fact, no one except an old manservant had seen inside her house in at least ten years before her death. Once the reader is informed of these two statements, the narrator begins with the flashbacks, mixing them with present descriptions in a stream of consciousness, or in a stream of memories, that leads the reader to feel sympathy for Miss Emily due to her loneliness and due to the fact it was hard for her to live by herself in the south of USA on a period of time when people were so conservative and prejudiced. Thus, she decided to have him married with her in spite of his will. Her desire of marrying him had prevailed over him so that she froze her desire in time; she froze the scene of the bridal evening. The upstairs room could have been the tomb of Homer Baron but it also would always be the bridal room for Miss Emily. It was her lonely victory, which she could enjoy ad nauseam, inside her madness, her crime was her victory over life, her crime was her revenge against men, against authority, against facts she could not control. Inside the upstairs room, once at least she was completely in charge of the situation and then she was allowed to be kind and sweet. She was thoughtful with his clothes, his shoes, and his toilet things. She was
