1. Explain the meaning of the term "curriculum".Curriculum can be defined as a plan for what is to be taught in schools. It consists of topics to be taught at all levels in the primary school. The term "curriculum" is generally understood as the courses or programmes of study offered by an educational institution. The concept of "curriculum" is best understood, however, from the Latin root of the word which is "currere", or "to run" as in to run a racecourse. To use an analogy, curriculum means the course (or path) that students have to run to finish the "race" -- or put another way, all the activities which students need do if they are to finish a programme of study and achieve the intended learning goals. Curriculum is more than just a body of knowledge, a list of subjects to be studied, or a syllabus -- it is all the planned experiences such as extra-class activities, guidance, and interpersonal relationships which learners may be exposed to in order to achieve the learning goals. In a curriculum there are aims of a curriculum and when it is evaluated we would be able to see that the content was covered. These three schools have always influenced the development of the curriculum in that its focus is either on the child, the society and the subject or the teacher. After the three schools of thought has been identify, Vallance and Eisner put together five areas that should be considered when developing a curriculum. The first level that should be evaluated should be at the Micro view. This refers to the teacher's evaluation in the classroom. Assessment plays a major role and it includes making observation of the students' performances in the curriculum area (subject) being evaluated as well as projects and group assignments. The teacher should also conduct interviews with the parents of the students in his or her class concerning their performance in class. He or she also should keep a checklist of the performance of his students to ensure that learning is taking place. When we know what levels are to be evaluated in the curriculum, we can know consider what to evaluate. Schwab suggested that there are four variables that should be considered in determining what to evaluate in a curriculum.
