Canadian Getaway
What a wonderful place this is, to me, like no other. This small, old, primitive cabin nestled deep in the woods upon a hill. It over looks a beautiful, serene, crystal clear lake. Barely touched by human hands, it remains natural in all its beauty. This has to be Gods' country. This cabin has been in my family for over a half century. My great, great uncle, while vacationing in Ontario, Canada, found this property. It's actually located ten miles down a dirt road from the small town of Chaffey's Lock. As we turn off this dirt road, we end up on the lane that meanders through the woods down to the lake and cabin. I start to feel like a child again, becoming excited, anxious and unable to sit still. In eager anticipation of the good fun and memories I know "we" (my entourage of family), will create. This primitive cabin built from cedar is a far cry from the Ritz Carlton. With no indoor plumbing, it makes you revert back to old fashion ways, but, for myself, that is just part of the fun. Thinking back, as a child, the hill the cabin was built on was almost mountain like and difficult to climb. Now that I'm older, I see it's merely just a little steep. Nevertheless, I still become a little out of breath
This main room of the cabin serves as the kitchen and living area, and is separated by an old dinning table that acts as a divider between the two. In the living area, are two old, cushiony couches and a rocking chair that are centered around a stone fireplace. The walls have windows that hang like big pictures, especially the one on the far wall, opposite the kitchen. It has the best picture of rocky hills, and beautiful, tall green cedar trees that tower above the lake below. There is a huge rock that sits high above the tree line, across the lake from the cabin. It's our tradition to hike up to it every time we're here. You don't need to be professional rock climber to get to the top, but strength and agility are a plus since the terrain leading up to it is a little rough. Once you are at the top you can see all of Upper Rock Lake and the surrounding countryside. The view is breathtaking, it's as if you are standing high on a cloud looking down on a lush meadow of green trees, rocky hills, wild flowers, and serene waters. as I walk up it. As I step up onto the old front porch, it creeks and moans from the weight of my body. The screen door also gives a loud squeak as it opens. This little rock jetty, which leads into the water, is also our bathing hole. I prefer to bathe here as opposed to "washing up" in the sink, or as my great grandmother would say, "taking a *"PTA" bath. Or you can take a "shower" at the boathouse, with a rigged up hose that pumps cold water from the lake. I still prefer a bath in the lake. Either way you have to be careful of leeches. Those nasty bugs are so hard to get off! When you step through the back door of the living room onto the porch, it too creeks and moans like the front. There are two large, white lounging chairs here where you can always find someone sitting enjoying their morning coffee, watching the sunrise while listening to the Loons give their morning call. In all of the years only two people have seen a bear. My great, great aunt saw one 30 years ago swimming across the lake in front the cabin. My husband claims he saw one 2 years ago, trekking through the woods, this after having a few bears, I mean beers himself. Stepping off the porch, I slowly make my way down the large slanted rock face that leads down to the lake. I am cautiously looking for snakes, since one y
