History of Soccer
Growing up and living in the United States, most people don't pay much attention to Soccer. In America, soccer is not even close to becoming a major sport, but to the rest of the world it is a sport which is taken very seriously. Soccer or "football" is the most popular sport in the world. It is played in over eighty countries, and is enjoyed much in the same way that Americans enjoy football, basketball, or baseball. But where did this sport start and how did it manage to develop into the great sport that it is today? The game of soccer can be traced back to as far as the eleventh century. The sport started in England, but the actual inventor or specific time the sport was invented remains unknown. In the beginning, it was a sport that was played during religious ceremonies or large gatherings, but it is widely agreed upon that by 1175 it became a game that was played by English schoolboys. Although this basic concept has not changed during history, the rules and development of the game of soccer have changed a great deal. Even today, all the rules for the sport aren't universal. With so many countries and leagues participating in the sport there are definitely some variations in the rules, but some of that comes in any sport. Overall, the sport has progressed a long way. Players just keep getting better and better as the intensity of the sport just gets greater and greater. And although the concept of the sport is very simple there is so much technique and skill involved in the playing of the sport. It's definitely a sport in which you need a lot of practice to be competitive. One very interesting thing I learned while studying the history of soccer was in learning the origin of the term "soccer". I've always wondered why in America, we call it soccer, while the rest of the world calls it football. The reason for that is that when soccer came to the United States, a sport called rugby developed from it. This rug
