Ticket Scalping Decisions

In the words of Dick Vitale, a famous sports analyst and commentator of NCAA men's basketball: "IT'S MARCH MADNESS, IT'S AWESOME BABY!" Along with March Madness comes the awesome opportunity for MSU fans to go to The Final Four in Minnesota this year. Many people who get lucky enough to get tickets to this occasion go about "what to do" in many different ways. Some people give up their tickets to a friend, others sell them to gain a profit and miss the game because you can receive large amounts of money. Yet there are still people who would decide to go to the game, and just pay for the transportation and lodging involved. In this discussion I will focus on the decision that Leo Tolstoy would come to based on his Confession, Robert Frank's plan-of-action as he has described in Passions within Reason, and finally the way an average Michigan State University student would approach this tough decision.

The confessions of Leo Tolstoy explain the different situations and people he has encountered in his life leaving him with mixed views about others, decision making, and religious beliefs. In regards to the situation of scalping tickets Tolstoy would probably face the decision of what is right and

I personally wish I was in the position to have to decide whether to go to The Final Four or sell my ticket, but I'm not. So instead, I'm gonna tell you my opinion on the decision fellow MSU students would make. For most of them, it would not be a matter of getting caught scalping the ticket or going to the game. Just like for Tolstoy, it would be a matter of self-benefit. Are better off missing classes and spending some money while enjoying some of the most exciting games in sports entertainment, or making a pretty large profit from selling the tickets while watching the games on television or at The Breslin Student Events Center with other screaming MSU fans? Select students from four colleges each year are given this choice but it is about a 50:50 split of either going or scalping. Now to go relate to Robert Frank, college students aren't worried about their reputation, because making money is what is usually important and none of their friends are going to look down on them for selling the ticket. I believe Frank would disagree with their decision because the data he has recovered goes against this, but for the majorities that are going to sell them, they tend to try and get around flat out selling by any means possible. Students sometimes try to just get around any consequences by testing the law by saying to a fellow student something like "I'll sell you this pencil for $400 and give you a free ticket to the Final Four games with it." Others will put it on e-bay and auction it off for a huge profit. The chance of getting caught selling a ticket to someone is rare because the majority of dealings are with friends, family, and peers. This makes it a simple transaction between two people in person, which almost is a sure shot of not being convicted of doing wrong unless you sell them to a cop. But for the few who decide to go to the games, they usually either don't care about missing classes, or are enormous fans who feel this is an opportunity that is not worth missing.

In Passions Within Reason, Robert Frank explains and focuses on people's emotions and the influences on their decision mak
