Flannery O'Connor's

A detailed Summary of Flannery O'Connor's

Authors often describe certain characters in stories in detail. The author usually sets these characters aside and examines them. The Grandmother in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" is a proper southern woman. She possesses several constant characteristics throughout the story. In her short story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find," Flannery O'Connor's character of the Grandmother does not change during the trip to Florida, the accident in the car, or the encounter with the Misfit.

As the trip to Florida begins, O'Connor shows the Grandmother's changeless personality. O'Connor establishes the vanity and manipulations of the Grandmother. James A. Grimshaw asserts that the Grandmother is vain and devious (39). O'Connor describes the

O'Connor also displays the unchanging of the Grandmother when the family encounters the Misfit. The Grandmother remains lady-like, and O'Connor introduces her distorted ideas of thinking through her Christian values. Michael Clark insists that the Grandmother "has undergone a personal experience that is significantly different from her normally artificial and spiritually dead self" (2). Before the Misfit shoots the Grandmother, she discusses Christ's raising of the dead and his death for the sins of mankind. O'Connor portrays the Grandmother as Jesus in this last part of the story. An example exists in the Grandmother's last words (195): "Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my children!"
