The Simplicity of Control
Throughout time, humankind has always had to struggle with control. At first, we learned to control one's self, so that one may think and act independently and intelligently to survive. Then humankind has learned to control most aspects of the awesome power known as nature. From taming animals, to creating bridges or damns, this has been a very difficult task, and there is still much to learn that we must do to understand how nature functions. However, all this power which we appear to have, still is not sufficient to satisfy almost everyone's selfish urge to have more and more power. In attempting to do so, we have learned that there are 3 major parts of a human that can be controlled: The mind (or thoughts), the body, and the emotions. Only once you have control of these three areas, this insatiable hunger for power -might- be nourished. Doing this sounds a lot more difficult than it really is. By examining some past events, such as study of literature, and observation of modern society, I have come to this conclusion: Who controls the body, controls the thoughts. Who controls the emotions, controls the body. I also may refer to this statement as the 'control cycle'. Of course, we must come up with a definition of th
she says, as if to convince him out of fear, and loyalty that he shall follow through with it, and it works. This simple action, is able to clearly show the weakness of the body in comparison to the immense power and strength emotions can have over it. As well, the fact that he was first independent, and then easily persuaded to do something inappropriate, shows that even the strong can be controlled. On the topic of love, in "Venus and Adonis", Shakespeare also expressed the power of emotions over the body in saying: Not only did George Orwell express his ideas of physical control, but he also did the same for controlling the emotions. Having control of fear, one of the most powerful of emotions, can be very effective in having further control over a person. By threatening loss of life, or the loss of someone or something of importance, you can bend peoples beliefs and ideologies to what you wish them to be. This is done very effectively inside of "room 101", which is ironically located in the ministry of love. This dreaded place, plays on peoples greatest fears, and tortures them into believing such lies as 2+2=5, and be sheep to ridiculous slogans such as "war is peace" and "freedom is slavery". Another fear which the party exploits, is the threat of thought police, which at anytime may descend upon you, your home, or your family, for even the suspicion of an inappropriate thought. This intense fear which everyone has (even the strongest of them) causes them to act like perfect civilians and workers, and to not make the slightest movement or even a flinch, which might make the thought police suspect you of being a traitor. A final prime example of how control of emotions controls the body, is the sudden change of hate from Eurasia to Eastasia right in the middle of a public speech. This sudden change of enemies inspires a tremendous amount of hate and anger in the citizens, which causes physical violence against all sources which say that Oceania was ever at war with Eurasia. These specific incidents and ideas inside the world of 1984 relate strongly to the idea of how controlling the emotions coincides with controlling the body, even though it was more than 5 decades ago. "The strongest body shall it make most weak..." "When you durst do it, then you were a man" In conclusion, I hope you have realized that having an extreme amount of control over someone, is a lot easier than you thought, even though it may be quite subtle at times. The way this is so easily accomplished, is simply because the thoughts really are able to be controlled by the mind, and the body truly can be controlled by one's emotions. Having controls over just one of the three areas, can give you more control than you may think. The apparent strength of the mind, body and emotions now appears to me as being much weaker than we thought, because even the strongest of them all is still very susceptible to being controlled, or even strongly influenced by some outside force whether we know it or not. We are now aware that this idea has been present for at least 5 centuries, and most likely a lot longer than that as well. We say we are evolving, but we a
