The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeThe story is about the dualism of human nature. The main character, Dr. Jekyll tries to seperate his good from his evil side into a different body. For that purpose he creates a drug. Finally everything gets out of hand with the result of Dr. Jekylls death. Robert Louis Stevenson (1850- 1894) is known to be a typical author of the Victorian times. He had the ability to describe scary events in a very exciting way. Treasure Island (1883) and the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are his most popular books. Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh as a son of a religious family (calvinism). His fathers profession was to construct Lighthouses. He was supposed to continue with this family tradition, but on account of his poor health he was not able to step into his fathers footprints. In 1875 he graduated from Edinburgh university and received the title of an advocate. His literary career started as a journalist. He although published essays about several trips through Europe he had gone on. In 1876 he met Ms. Osbourne, an American Lady who stayed in France. Together they went back to the states and got married.
ast episode of his life was a stay in Samoa where he dedicated his life to improve the situation of the native population. As a result of that he got into a conflict with the German colonial supremacy. By the time he died his popularity as a writer had reached its climax. After Dr. Jekyll is informed about the murder case by Utterson he promises him that he will never set eyes on Mr. Hyde again. It seems like an new life begins for Dr. Jekyll after the disappearance of Mr. Hyde. He even becomes friends with Dr. Lanyon again. Then from one day to another the doctor stays at his house in soltitude and doesn' t wish to se anyone. That' s why he keeps hisself shut in a cabinet. About two weeks afterwards Dr. Lanyon dies, leaving a letter for Utterson that is not to be opened until the death or disappearance of Henry Jekyll. Because Utterson is concerned about his friend he goes to Jekyll' s house. When he tells him to let him in, a voice begs him to have mercy. Utterson recognizes the voice, being the one of Edward Hyde. As he breaks through the door he hears a scream and when he enters the room he finds the dead body of Mr. Hyde. He searches for Jekyll everywhere, but there' s not a single trace. Instead of his friend he fiends an envelope, that he opens. In that envelope there' s a testament in which Jekyll declares Utterson as his sole heir. Then there' s a personal letter for him, written by Dr. Jekyll. In that letter the whole secret is unveiled. Jekyll confesses that he was always possessed by the idea of dividing the two elemts of good and evil into two different bodies. For that purpose he creates a drug, which he tries out on hisself. After he takes it, he turns into Edward Hyde. At first he feels free because now he can live out his evil instincts, protected by the body of Edward Hyde. If he wants to turn back into Henry Jekyll he just has to take the drug again.
