Sonny Blues & Everyday Use

Some children would mislead the parents toward that assumption if they continue with their negativity. In the two stories "Sonny's Blues" and "Every day Use" the parents and caregivers assume that their children will fail in life but they are mistaken? Parents and caregivers can misjudge their children. Parents can assume that there children would automatically do negative things because of their past.

"Everyday Use" was about a Mama and her two daughters Dee and Maggie the Mama assume that Maggie is dumb because of her shyness and education. The three characters have different personality traits, especially Maggie. Dee was the daughter that left home to go to the city to pursue her education in college and to get a better life. Maggie just did not seem to have any ambitions to succeed in life. Maggie's education was not so great. Maggie would try to read to her mama but "she stumbles along good naturedly but she can't see well"(Walker90) Mama would comment. "She knows she is not that bright"(Walker90). Mama already assumes that Maggie is not a smart child because of her reading skills. "Like good looks and money, quickness passed her", (Walker90) Mama replies, meaning that Maggie is dumb and slow and that it takes her awhile t


"Sonny's Blues" is about two brothers that have loss their parents, and the older brother has to play the role of a caregiver to the younger brother Sonny but the older brother assumes that Sonny has no hope in the future because of his past negative lifestyle. The older brother that is narrator of the story is an Algebra teacher, and Sonny was just always getting in trouble. Sonny abused drugs that made his brother assume that he was a failure. The brother talks to one of Sonny's friends in the story and he gets very angry for the reason that Sonny went to rehab but they let him out thinking he would not recover from his addiction. The brother expresses him self in anger using words like "Why does he want to die?" (Baldwin) Assuming that Sonny has no control of his life and is just disappointment. Sonny wrote a letter to his brother stating that "I'd rather blow my brains out than go though this again" Sonny is very hurt? what he is putting his brother though. The brother that is the caregiver of Sonny's seems he lots hope? and that the only way to get Sonny life together is getting educated. The brother had a bit of hope for Sonny whenever he moved to his girlfriend's parent house. The brother thought that Sonny was attending school regularly but he was missing. After the brother found out about Sonny was missing school, he assume that it was all he can do there was not any hope for Sonny. Sonny and his brother had a conversation where Sonny told his brother that he wanted to be become a jazz player. The brother stated "Why on earth he'
